How often to change a fridge water filter

How to know it is time

Change procedure you can follow without flooding the fridge

Before you remove the old cartridge, identify whether your filter is inside the fresh food compartment, in the base grille, or fitted in the supply line behind the appliance. Turn off the ice maker if it has a separate switch or arm. This prevents the ice system calling for water while the filter is out.
Place a towel under the filter head or base grille. A normal internal cartridge can release 20 ml to 100 ml of water when removed. An external inline cartridge can release more if the supply valve is not shut.
For an internal twist filter, turn the old cartridge slowly until it stops, then pull it straight out. Do not use pliers on the plastic body unless it is already damaged.
For a push button or pull tab filter, press the release fully and keep the cartridge level as it comes out. Tilting it down too early is a common cause of water in the fridge liner.
Remove caps or transport plugs from the new cartridge only when you are ready to fit it. Check that any visible O-rings are seated flat and are not twisted.
Fit the cartridge in the same orientation as the old one. Push it fully home, then twist or lock it until it stops. A half locked filter may pass water at first and leak later.

If water flow is weak straight after replacement, the cause is often air, not a blocked cartridge. Hold the dispenser paddle for 10 seconds, release it for 10 seconds, and repeat for 3 to 5 minutes. If the flow stops completely, remove the cartridge and refit it, making sure it is fully seated.

If the filter leaks at the front, remove it and inspect the O-rings. A dry or folded seal can be reseated with clean fingers. Do not add tape to an internal fridge cartridge, because the seal is made by the O-ring or flat gasket, not by the thread. If the leak is from the filter head rather than the cartridge joint, turn off the water supply and leave the filter out until the head can be inspected.
