Can I use a universal inline filter instead of the brand specific cartridge?
Only if your fridge uses an external, in line filter fitted on the water supply pipe, such as Samsung's DA29-10105J or Daewoo's DD7098 system. A universal inline filter can replace those because they sit outside the fridge on standard push fit connectors. It cannot replace an internal cartridge that twists or clips into a housing inside the fridge compartment, because a universal filter is not built to that housing's shape.
Does a more expensive cartridge filter for longer?
Not necessarily. Price differences usually reflect the certification testing behind a cartridge and whether it is sold as an official manufacturer part or a compatible equivalent, not how long the carbon block lasts. The manufacturer's stated change interval, usually six months, applies regardless of price.
Can I keep using a cartridge past its change interval if the water still tastes fine?
Taste is not a reliable signal. A carbon block cartridge left in place well past its interval loses filtering capacity gradually, and in the worst case can become a place where bacteria build up rather than a place where they are filtered out. Follow the manufacturer's interval rather than your own sense of taste.
What happens if I fit the wrong reference and it does not quite seat?
Forcing a cartridge that does not turn, click or push in cleanly can crack the housing or leave a seal that leaks under water pressure. If a cartridge does not seat without resistance, it is very likely the wrong reference for your fridge.
Are compatible, non branded cartridges safe to use?
Generally yes, provided they are sold against the correct reference code for your fridge and carry a certification such as NSF 42 or NSF 53 on the pack. Always check the box of the specific pack you buy, since certification can vary between sellers of the same reference.
My fridge has no visible filter door anywhere inside it, why not?
Some ranges, including several Samsung and Daewoo American style fridges, use an external in line cartridge fitted on the water pipe behind or underneath the fridge instead of an internal compartment. Check there before assuming your fridge has no filter at all.
Practical replacement procedure
Before touching the filter, turn off the water feed to the fridge if there is a small isolation valve on the pipe. If there is no local valve, switch off the supply at the nearest accessible valve. Put a towel under the filter area and keep a shallow tray ready, because 50 ml to 250 ml of water can drain from the line or housing.
For an internal cartridge, open the filter cover fully and note the locked and unlocked marks before you turn anything. Press the release button if fitted, then rotate the cartridge slowly until it stops. Pull it straight out without levering against the plastic housing. Wipe the socket with a clean damp cloth, then check that the old sealing rings have not stayed inside the housing.
For an external inline unit, take a clear photo of the flow arrow and pipe routing before removal. Push the collet on the connector towards the filter body, then pull the pipe out squarely. Do not pull at an angle, as this can score the pipe. If the pipe end is marked or oval, cut off 10 mm to 15 mm with a square cut before refitting.
After fitting the new cartridge, restore the water supply slowly. Run water through the dispenser until the flow is steady and the first dark carbon fines have cleared. A practical flushing amount is 3 litres to 5 litres for most household cartridges, unless the filter label gives a different figure. Check again for drips after 10 minutes, then again after 1 hour.
Tools, space and measurements to check
You normally need no specialist tools, but the working space matters. A fridge pulled out by 300 mm to 500 mm usually gives enough room to see an external filter and avoid bending the water line sharply. If the appliance is built in tightly, move it slowly and check that the pipe is not trapped under a rear wheel.

Useful equipment is simple: a towel, a shallow tray, a torch, a marker pen, a jug with litre marks, and a pipe cutter if an external line end is damaged. Scissors can flatten plastic pipe, so use them only if they cut cleanly and squarely.
Frequent mistakes and recovery steps
- If the dispenser spurts after a filter change, air is still in the line. Hold the dispenser paddle for 20 seconds at a time, rest it for 20 seconds, and repeat until the flow is smooth.
- If water tastes dusty or looks grey at first, stop using that water for drinking and continue flushing into a jug. This is usually loose carbon fines, not a fridge fault.
- If an internal cartridge weeps from the housing, remove it and inspect the sealing rings. Refit it once only, using firm even pressure. If it still leaks, stop the water supply and do not keep testing under pressure.
- If a push fit connector leaks, remove the pipe and cut a fresh square end. Reinsert the pipe fully, then pull back gently to seat the gripper ring.
- If the dispenser flow is much slower than before, check that the isolation valve is fully open and that the pipe behind the fridge has not been kinked when the appliance was pushed back.
Do not use sealant tape on a push fit water line. The seal is made by the internal O ring against the smooth pipe surface, not by thread contact. Tape can stop the pipe reaching the correct depth and can create a leak instead of curing one.
Special cases worth checking
After a house move or kitchen refit, do not assume the filter position is the same as before. Fitters sometimes add an extra external cartridge under the sink or behind the plinth. If two filters are fitted in series, flow can drop noticeably, especially when both are old. Trace the pipe from the cold feed to the fridge before ordering or replacing anything.
If the fridge has an ice maker, discard the first full bin of ice after changing the cartridge. Ice made during the first few litres of flushing can contain air bubbles and carbon fines. This is separate from the drinking water flush and can take several hours depending on the ice maker cycle.
If the fridge has been unused for more than 2 weeks, flush several litres before drinking the water, even if the cartridge is not yet due for replacement. If it has been off for a long period with water standing inside, replace the cartridge and flush the system before use.
