How to replace it

Turn off the water supply at the isolation valve feeding the fridge, usually under the sink or behind the appliance.
Note the direction of water flow marked with an arrow on the old cartridge housing before disconnecting it.
Disconnect the push fit connectors from each end of the old cartridge; most release with a firm push on the collet ring while pulling the pipe.
Check the reference printed on the old cartridge against DD7098 before fitting the replacement.
Fit the new cartridge with the flow arrow matching the original direction, pushing each pipe fully into its connector.
Turn the water supply back on, check both connections for leaks, then run 2 to 3 litres through the dispenser before drinking it.

Common mistakes

Buying by fridge brand alone instead of checking the exact part number, which on a brand with more than one system leads to a cartridge that does not fit.
Leaving the filter well past its change interval, which reduces flow rate and can let the carbon block become a place for bacteria to grow rather than filter them out.
Forcing a cartridge that does not turn or push in without resistance; if it does not seat cleanly, it is very likely the wrong reference.

Tools, access space and measurements to check before starting

Plan the job with the fridge pulled far enough forward to see the pipe without stretching it. A quarter inch fridge pipe has an outside diameter of about 6.35 mm, so it is small enough to kink if it is bent sharply behind the appliance. Keep every bend wider than about 50 mm radius, which is roughly the curve of a mug, not the curve of a finger.

Have a dry cloth, a shallow tray and a torch ready before you open any connector.
Use a pen or tape to mark the water flow direction on the pipe if the old label is hard to read.
Leave at least 30 mm of straight pipe at each end of the filter so the tube can enter the push fit connector squarely.
If the pipe end is scratched, oval or crushed, cut it back only if there is enough spare length to reconnect without tension.
Do not use sealant tape on a push fit connection. The seal is made inside the connector, not on a thread.

Most leaks after this type of change come from pipe position, not from the cartridge body. The pipe must be round, clean and pushed fully home. On many quarter inch push fit fittings, the pipe travels roughly 15 to 20 mm into the connector. If you can still see a previous insertion mark several millimetres away from the fitting face, the tube is probably not fully seated.

Detailed replacement procedure with practical checks

Start with the dispenser off and no ice harvest in progress. Close the isolation valve fully, then dispense water for 5 to 10 seconds to reduce line pressure. Put the tray under the lower end of the old cartridge because 50 to 150 ml of water can remain inside the tube and filter.

Before removing anything, photograph the existing layout. The photo should show the filter direction, pipe route and any clips. Press the collet squarely into the connector face, then pull the tube in line with the fitting. Do not twist hard against the plastic body. If the tube will not release, push the tube in by 1 to 2 mm first, hold the collet down again, then pull straight out.

After the old cartridge is out, wipe both pipe ends. Check the last 20 mm of each tube. A good end is round, smooth and cut square. A bad end has a diagonal cut, bite marks, whitening from stress, or a ridge left by an old fitting. If the tube is sound, insert it into the new filter until it stops, then give a light pull to confirm it is locked.

Open the water valve slowly, about a quarter turn at first. Watch both ends for 60 seconds before pushing the fridge back. Then open the valve fully and dispense into a jug. If the flow spits air, pause for 10 seconds and continue. After flushing, dry the filter and fittings with tissue. Tissue shows a slow weep earlier than a cloth because it darkens with a few drops.

Faults after fitting and how to recover

If a fitting leaks twice after refitting the same tube end, stop and inspect the tube rather than tightening or forcing anything. Push fit parts do not improve with extra force. A tube cut at a slight angle can leave a small path past the seal, especially when the fridge is moved and the line is pulled sideways.

Special cases for older installations

Some older American style installations have the external cartridge under the sink rather than directly behind the fridge. In that layout, the same practical checks apply, but the pipe may pass through a cabinet side or floor void. Make sure the pipe is not rubbing on a sharp drilled hole, because vibration from the fridge can mark the tube over time.

If there is no separate isolation valve for the fridge, do not disconnect the filter until the cold supply to that branch is shut off safely. In rented homes or shared pipework, confirm which valve controls the fridge feed before starting. A closed valve should stop the dispenser flow within a few seconds once pressure is relieved.
