Tools, space and checks before you remove the cartridge
Set aside 10 to 15 minutes for the job. The actual cartridge change usually takes less than 2 minutes, but the extra time is useful for checking the head, wiping the socket and flushing water through the dispenser afterwards.
- Use a dry towel under the filter area before you turn the cartridge. A small spill is normal, usually a few teaspoons, but older cartridges can release more water if they have not been changed for a long time.
- Keep a bowl or jug near the dispenser for flushing. Plan for several litres of water to pass through before normal use.
- Do not use pliers on the cartridge body. If the cartridge is stiff, use hand pressure only and improve your grip with a dry cloth.
- Have a torch ready if the filter is fitted high inside the fresh food compartment. You need to see that the keyways line up squarely with the filter head.

Step by step fitting procedure

If the dispenser flow is weak immediately after fitting, do not assume the filter is faulty. Air in the line, a cartridge not fully locked, or a fridge water supply valve that has been partly closed are more common causes. Check the valve position, refit the cartridge once, then flush again.
Frequent mistakes, recovery steps and special cases
If water leaks from the filter head, remove the cartridge and inspect the seal area. Refit it squarely and lock it again. If the old seal is still inside the head, remove it carefully before trying the new cartridge. Do not stack two seals, as this can stop the cartridge from reaching its final locked position.
If the new cartridge will not start into the socket, stop. Compare it with the old cartridge from the head end. A difference in keyway length or head shape means it is not the same fitting. This is the point where owners often damage the head by pushing harder. Keep the old filter and use the full model number from the rating plate before ordering again.
If the filter unlocks but will not pull out, turn it back to the locked position and unlock it again while pulling straight. A small twist and pull motion by hand is safer than levering under the head. If access is poor, remove nearby shelves and let the fridge door open wider rather than working at an angle.
After holidays or several weeks without use, discard the first water from the dispenser even if the filter is not due for replacement.
